Segovia

Day 2 brought another full day.  We started with a breakfast at a pastry shop on the way to Atocha station were we would catch a short distance (cercanias) train to Charmartin station- both in Madrid.  We then headed to Segovia, city of the aqueduct, alcazar (moorish/christian palace) and suckling pig (cochinillo.)  I was a bit nervous about the cochinillo as we were trying a new restaurant that many locals had told me was the best (El Duque) and were leaving the most well known one (El Candido.)  The switch was well worth it as the food and ambiance were fantastic.  We even were presented the cochinillo by the owner whose family has had the place since the late 1800's.  She explained the importance of cochinillo in Segovia and let us part the them with a plate and throwthe plate to the ground.  We got back to Madrid in time to enter the Reina Sofia museum which houses modern Spanish art, most notably Picasso's Guernica.  The boys then saw a a great production of the Spanish Cicvil War play Ay, Carmela! in the Teatro Reina Victoria.  We ended the night with an 11pm dinner at 100 Montaditos, a restaurant that shows fast food can be done well.  Montaditos are small sandwiches and here they cost 1 euro.  They use good bread and one has a choice of about 100 different fillings.  We capped off the night at Madrid's most famous churros joint, Chocolateria San Gines.
